Shiatsu, interpreted as 'finger-pressure' originates from theories and techniques of both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Japanese medicine (Anma).

It integrates Oriental concepts of energy and healing by inducing calming of the central nervous system, by following meridian (energy) paths, encouraging the individual's own natural healing mechanisms to flow openly and freely.

Shiatsu treatments are experienced as deeply relaxing, invigorating and energising.

Who can benefit from a shiatsu?

People of all ages and body types can benefit from shiatsu. It is effective in treating a multitude of conditions, like: back and neck pain, menstrual conditions, digestive problems, insomnia, muscle tension, joint conditions, headaches and stress.

Shiatsu promotes the improvement of conditions like those above and helps to enhance a sense of wellbeing between the body, mind and spirit.

Treatments encourages circulation and balance

A Treatment Session

Treatment is usually performed with the client lying down on a cotton futon mattress. Being relaxed, open, having a positive connection and empathy with the client, the therapist treats with the use of various tools, namely their palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet.

Pressure, rubbing, and stretching is applied to the treating area. Leaning bodyweight, rather than strength is used which allows a feeling of support and comfort.

The entire body is worked on following meridians, which are pathways of energy flowing throughout the human body, and tsubos (fixed acu-points). This encourages imbalances between the body's functioning systems to regain its working potential and results in a state of harmony and equilibrium of natural wellbeing.

During a session, both the therapist and patient will feel maximum comfort when dressed in loose, soft natural fibers, such as cotton pants and top.

No insertion of needles and application of oils is involved and with the exception of a cottonEffect

The positive bodily responses like support, comfort and pleasure in the human body brought through touch is felt directly through the nervous system, which promotes our bodies to conserve and store energy. This energy, which is known as Ki in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is vital to the healthy activity processes of our systems, (including skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic and reproductive).

Shiatsu encourages input to the smooth flow of Ki, not only on a muscular and skeletal level but also to the deeper levels of organs, joints and tendons by implementing specific contact, stretching, holding and rubbing.

As a result, with continuous treatment, underlying problems and ailments can be addressed and long-term changes take place, sometimes exceeding the effectiveness of where other therapies and Western medicine have stopped short.

Sessions of shiatsu can be experienced as profoundly relaxing, revitalising and purifying consciousness and self-insight. A Treatment Session
